Falling retail bicycle sales in the euro area

Retail sale of bicycles in the euro zone dropped significantly in April. Reported static control of the European Union Eurostat.

Compared with March sales fell by 1%. Economists had expected a decline in average only 0.1%.



Even on food, beverages and tobacco costs the population increased by only 0.3%. However, in all other categories of goods sales fell by 1.4%.

Bicycle sales in Belgium fell by 1.2%, France 1.5%, Spain 2.4% and Portugal 2.1%. Data for Greece and Italy are not available. The only European Union country where bike sales have increased, was Germany, rising 0.6% in March.

Falling sales of bicycles in the Netherlands

The first report on how the crisis reduces the bike sales came from the Netherlands. Reliable sources say that sales of electric bikes have fallen for the first five months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. The source reports that hit all the major manufacturers of bicycles.

Discounts are not effective

Dutch retailers also report about the decline in revenues bike shop. However, bike sales lag far behind in sales in 2011. But last year in many European countries was only early spring which certainly increased buying activity. Retail bicycle shop hoping for a good summer to compensate for losses.
